Nutrition For Diabetes - Making It A Family Affair

How is nutrition for diabetes sufferers any different than nutrition for non-diabetics?  Except for the fact that you likely test your blood sugar levels several times a day and have to give yourself insulin shots, you could eat like everyone else and no one would ever need know you are a diabetic.  Is that really possible?

Over the past century, Americans have drifted towards a diet heavy in simple carbohydrates.  Too many sugary foods, too many starches like rice or pasta or bread, too little vegetables and fruit, and too little protein.  Eating this way is somewhat easier on the wallet and is certainly pushed by advertisers, but it is hardly the recommended nutrition for diabetes patients.

But what is the result of how we have been eating over the past century?  The number of people suffering from obesity and diabetes has skyrocketed.  And while the increase in numbers is shocking, the really tragic part is the number of children who are now suffering from either or both of these conditions.

The advertising industry is very good at what they do ... and we are very susceptible to their enticing ads and time-saving products.  With society the way it is today, fast food and quick-fix meals are what most people gravitate towards.  The art of cooking is fast going by the wayside in many homes.  And what is it getting us?

Whatever happened to crockpots?  Or how about spending one weekend a month cooking dishes that are frozen until the day you are ready to eat them?  You can easily create your own fast food or quick-fix meals with a little bit of planning and preparation.

By cooking your own food, you have a lot more control over the quality of food you eat and this makes it much easier to cater to proper nutrition for diabetes.  You can control how much starch is used and you can include lots more vegetables to make the meal more healthy.

So if you or someone in your family has diabetes and you would like to have all your family be able to eat the same things, you need to find a way to prepare your own meals.  There are ways to do it ... but you will need to make some changes.

Be sure to read about how Governor Mike Huckabee lost over 100 pounds and no longer has to worry about diabetes because he was willing to make some nutritional changes to his diet.

By providing better nutrition for diabetes sufferers, you will also be giving the rest of your family better nutritious meals also.  Give it a go ... you'll all be healthier for it.
