A Diet For Diabetic People - It's All In Your Mind

If you approach planning a diet for diabetic people with "restrictions" in mind, it will be a chore for the menu planner and will be a bad experience for the diabetic.  Try looking at things differently and see if it doesn't make it easier on everyone.

A diabetic once handed me a fresh peach ... and then asked if I would like Splenda to put on it.  (long pause)  I have eaten canned peaches and baked dishes like peach cobbler all my life but I would have NEVER thought of desecrating a piece of "fresh" fruit with an artificial sweetener!  I said "No thanks" and we each enjoyed our individual peaches ... she with Splenda on hers and me with mine just the way God made it.  I know mine was much better!

As for desserts on your diet for diabetic people, if you must use artificial sweeteners that is your decision, but you might want to try a natural sweetener like Stevia instead.  And as with most things, modified recipes do take a little getting used to and will never be the same as the original high-sugar, high-fat version.  Sometimes the new versions are so bad that they are just not worth forcing yourself to eat and you might as well try to learn to like new things.

I went on a cruise once and took that opportunity to try escargot.  Since there is so much food on a cruise, I figured if I didn't like them, it's not like I would go hungry or anything.  Surprisingly, they were quite good.  But the thought of eating snails is still not appealing to me and I've never had them again.

The same thing happened with frog legs and snake soup.  They both did truly taste "just like chicken" but knowing it was frogs keeps me from eating them again, and I really couldn't make myself eat more than half a bowl of the snake soup.  But I tried them once and I know I could eat snails or frog legs or snake soup again if I had to.

Now celery ... can't stand the stuff ... and I'd rather go hungry than eat raw celery.  To each his own!  Fortunately, any diet for diabetic sufferers can include many more interesting foods and recipes than just raw celery.

There are so many recipes out there just waiting for you to include them in your diet for diabetic people.  Don't turn your nose up at something just because you've never tried it before.  There is a difference in not liking something and having never tried it before.  Make sure you actually try it before you say you don't like it.
