Diabetes Health Care - Mike Huckabee Style

I recently heard Mike Huckabee, former Arkansas governor and 2008 Republican presidential candidate, explain how he had lost over 100 pounds.  He said that he had been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, but since losing the weight he no longer has to worry about diabetes.

His answer was rather short since he was answering a question posed by someone in the audience but what he said was very critical to his success.  He stated that he had made a Lifestyle Change.  Notice that he did not say he had gone on a diet in order to lose the weight but had consciously made a decision to change his lifestyle.

Governor Huckabee said he started eating nutritiously and began exercising.  He cut out sugar and Southern foods ... and if you are from the South, you know that that meant making some MAJOR changes in his lifestyle and food choices!

On a comical and somewhat memorable note, he indicated that in determining acceptable food choices, there are 2 things to keep in mind -

  • If it comes through the car window it isn't food
  • If it wasn't a food 100 years ago, it is a "food product" and not a food.

So what can be learned from Governor Huckabee's answer about losing over 100 pounds?

He didn't mention a specific diet because that wasn't really what had helped him.  Maybe he did follow certain diet recommendations or maybe he didn't.  But what he did focus on was -

Changing his lifestyle ~ Eating nutritiously ~ Exercising regularly

If you focus on those 3 things, you too can be successful in improving your overall health and eating habits.  Will you lose 100 pounds?  Will diabetes no longer be an issue for you?  Who knows ... but that isn't the goal.  Will it be easy?  No.  Will it be worth it?  You bet it will.

Change your lifestyle, improve your eating habits, and exercise regularly ... and you WILL be rewarded with better health.
